Dvd Burner Questions.

Hey guys looking for a dvd burner for my computer. Ive burned cd's in the past, but never burned dvd's. What i want to be able to do is:

1) Burn dvd's that are great quality very fast so i can distribute them in large amounts.
2) I want these dvd's to play on every dvd player possible, so the burner needs to be compatible with all files. (I want to burn mpeg, avi, etc. etc. as well as be able to copy a regular dvd).
3) Since i will be burning tons of dvd's, maybe up to a hundred a week, what is the best for that? A external burner? Internal burner in an external case? Seems like the heat would be an issue.
4) Lightscribe is not necessary and if it leads to reliability issues would not be wanted.
5) Is it a better idea to get a dvd burner that is exclusively for burning dvd's and not for playback? Or do all dvd burners nowadays come with dvd playback capability.

Basically just want to be able to burn movies on my computer as fast as possible with really good quality. Do i need a special drive to do this or will any of these $40 drives on newegg do the trick? :toast:

Yes, they will, make sure you get x16 media.

Thanks Data. Do most burners nowadays support all media files? Haven't been into the computer scene for a year or two, so its like relearning a language. Things move to fast.

The burners deal with ones and zeros and do not care about file formats. To make your DVDs playable you will need to author your DVDs which means creating a certain set of files to burn. That process often requires file conversion. Some software titles can do all three (conversion, authoring, burning) while the other do one or two but with more options. I want to refer you to videohelp.com that is an excellent recourse for video enthusiasts.

most dvds are now encrypted too, if your cpu isnt good enough then dont even bother burning movies in bulk since its a hassle.

Easiest way is to make the image of the dvd to your hard drive than burn.
i have a quadcore intel and total encoding time under 20 mins for the initial image.
About 8 mins to burn at 16x so your looking at 8 mins per dvd tops, with an image of the dvd on your pc already

I just got a Samsung SH203B burner from newegg and installed it, but im getting a DMA Driver error, CRC error when i try to burn using nero 7 ultra edition. Im searching around on google, any quick help suggestions?

Whats the easiest way to make the image of the dvd on your hardrive? I currently am using my old gaming pc, with a dual core opteron 165 1.8 ghz, with 2 gigs of ocz gold, and dfi ultra d motherboard. What would you suggest i upgrade on this system honkee? Im not looking to download new movies and burn them, im burning educational films for family, friends, and groups i belong too. Mabye i can talk with you online via aim or yahoo?
